Julie Bawin

Julie Bawin is Professor of Contemporary Art History at the University of Liège, where she directs all teaching and research in the field. She is also director of the Sart Tilman Open Air Museum of Contemporary Art (MACPA Museum) in University of Liège and, since 2017, she chairs of the FNRS Research Group Museums and Contemporary Art. Specializing in the study of curatorial practices, she published a reference work on the history of exhibitions curated by artists (L’artiste commissaire : entre posture critique, jeu créatif et valeur ajoutée, Paris, Éditions des archives contemporaines, 2014) and she has just published the book De quoi le curating est-il le nom ? Métamorphes d’une pratique dans le champ de l’exposition (Brussels, La Lettre volée, 2025). In March 2024, she also published the book Art public et controverses. XIXe-XXIe siècle (Paris, CNRS Éditions). Since 2021, she has been a co-researcher in the international CIECO partnership on “New Uses of Collections in Art Museums” (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, 2021-2028).

Julie Bawin è Professoressa di Storia dell’Arte Contemporanea presso l’Università di Liegi dove coordina tutte tutte le attività di insegnamento e di ricerca nel settore. Bawin è anche direttrice del Sart Tilman Open Air Museum of Contemporary Art (MACPA Museum) dell’Università di Liegi e dal 2007 presiede l’FNRS Research Group Museums and Contemporary Art. Specializzata nello studio delle pratiche curatoriali, ha pubblicato un libro di riferimento sulla storia delle mostre curate dagli artisti (L’artiste commissaire : entre posture critique, jeu créatif et valeur ajoutée, Paris, Éditions des archives contemporaines, 2014) ed ha recentemente pubblicato il libro De quoi le curating est-il le nom ? Métamorphes d’une pratique dans le champ de l’exposition (Brussels, La Lettre volée, 2025). Nel mese di marzo 2024, ha anche pubblicato Art public et controverses. XIXe-XXIe siècle (Paris, CNRS Éditions). Dal 2021, Bawin è co-ricercatrice nell’ambito del progetto internazionale e interistituzionale “New Uses of Collections in Art Museums” (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, 2021-2028).
